KUALA LUMPUR, 28 April 2015

Felda Global Ventures Holdings Berhad (FGV) is aiming to enhance its current safety practises to Oil & Gas industry standard – as part of its commitment towards creating a safer workplace and making Safety and Health a way of life to its employees.

Group President and Chief Executive Officer FGV, Dato’ Mohd Emir Mavani Abdullah said with over 60,000 employees and contract workers employed by FGV across the Group, safety and health is a central emphasis for the organisation.

He said although this is a challenging task, the target is indeed achievable via various improvements measures embarked by the Group at all levels of its operations.

We are improving tremendously. The number of occupational related fatalities were reduced from 13 in 2010 to four in 2014 on the back of lower occupational accidents cases from 424 in 2011 to 351 in 2014.

“In addition, lower accidents would also result in increased productivity as it mean reducing the loss of working days and costs in occupational accidents,” he said in his speech during the launch FGV World OSH Day Celebration in conjunction of World Day for Safety at Menara Felda, here, today.

Mohd Emir further said FGV has taken proactive steps to address safety and health initiatives including to increase the number of Safety and Health certified officers in FGV, on a ratio of one to every 500 employees.

“This would mean that FGV will have the biggest number of HSE champions compared to other palm oil conglomerates in the world. It is also an indication of our

seriousness to strive for higher standards of safety in line with our sustainability and rapid growth.” he added.

He said locally, FGV plans to create the Plantation Safety Supervisor (PSS) posts at its close to 250 operational premises, which is similar to Site Safety Supervisors which are mandatory to construction and engineering industries.

Mohd Emir added that FGV is also focusing on enhancing safety risk management through safety audit programme by adopting a more detailed contractor management system by tightening SOPs on high-risk activities and setting up a framework for more effective industrial hygiene monitoring.

“We are also benchmarking to international standards, industry codes of practices, and the oil and gas industry, which is well known for their high safety standards. Towards this end, FGV is pursuing OHSAS 18001 certification this year,” he added.

FGV is also one of 16 companies nationwide selected to spearhead the Ministry of Human Resource’s OSH-in-Schools programme. Towards this end, FGV is assisting Sekolah Menengah Vokasional Klang in promoting OSH programmes and help the school to set-up an OSH Club to develop youth safety champions.

Given FGV’s expertise in biogas operations, it is also working closely with the Department of Occupational Safety & Health to develop the National Biogas Safety Policy and Guidelines.

And in helping Felda communities, FGV has jointly organised a landmark project with Ministry of Health called Komuniti Sihat Perkasa Negara (KOSPEN) in Serting, Negeri Sembilan. This two-year health initiative campaign promotes the prevention of Non-Communicable diseases including heart problems, hypertension and diabetes.
