Research & Development

FGV Research and Development (R&D) arm has over five decades of expertise, pioneering advancements across the oil palm industry.

Our research spans the entire supply chain, focusing on innovative solutions to enhance yields, optimise milling efficiency, and develop high-value downstream products, opening new revenue opportunities. As home to one of Southeast Asia’s largest oil palm research centres, we are committed to scientific advancement and market-driven innovation.

We are Malaysia’s largest producer of oil palm seeds, supplying over 27 million seeds annually, including the award winning Yangambi ML161, which commands approximately 40% of the local seed market. Beyond seed innovation, our 700,000 MT capacity fertiliser plant serves both domestic and international markets, reinforcing our role in advancing agricultural excellence.

YANGAMBI 3 WAY
  • Newest DxP FGV variety, developed through a long-term breeding programme
  • Officially released in 2008
  • Derived from three breeding lines:

    • Dura line: introgression of Dura Nigerian (MPOB) × Dura Deli Group
    • Pisifera line: from the Yangambi ML161 family
  • Key advantages of Yangambi 3 Way:

    • Smaller bunch size with higher number of bunches produced annually
    • High yield potential for both crude palm oil (CPO) and kernel
  • Recommended for high-density planting:

    • 148 to 160 palms per hectare

Cloning Through Tissue Culture

Plant Tissue Culture

Oil Palm

FGV has been involved in oil palm tissue culture since the 1980s, producing about 1.0 million ramets annually since 2010 through the FGV Innovation Centre (FGVIC). By leveraging genetic variability, FGV develops high-yielding clones from elite crosses, with strict ortet selection criteria (O/B >32% and high bunch number). The resulting ramets show uniform growth, low abnormalities (<5%), and deliver around 20% higher oil yield per hectare compared to commercial DxP materials.

Other crops (Rubber, Pineapple, Sugarcane, Banana and others)

FGVIC also produces clonal seedlings for a range of crops beyond oil palm, including banana, pineapple, rubber, sugarcane, and tongkat ali, to meet diverse customer needs. Through intensive tissue culture research, FGVIC has developed proprietary formulations such as PLANTgerminus and EZgrow. These are used across key in vitro stages in oil palm—callogenesis, embryogenesis, shoot development, and rooting—and have also been applied successfully in other crop tissue culture processes.

Agronomy Research & Advisory

Agronomic Services

Our Agronomic Advisory Services promote good agricultural practices (GAP) to maximise yield potential, covering key areas such as palm health, fertilisation, moisture conservation, weeding, and pest and disease management. Currently, we serve approximately 1 million hectares of oil palm and rubber plantations in Malaysia and internationally.

Replanting Advisory services

Proper replanting preparation is critical for achieving high oil palm productivity. Our experienced agronomists provide advisory services to help planters maximise returns on their planting investments.

Technical nursery advisory visit

We provide expert guidance on best practices in oil palm nursery management to ensure healthy seedling growth and high-quality planting materials for optimal field performance.

Integrated Pest & Disease Management

Maximise yield by minimising crop losses through integrated pest and disease management, including rat control, barn owl biological control, rhinoceros beetle and bagworm management, as well as biosolutions.

Agricultural inputs derived from this research are:

Ratbaits – BUTIK S and BUTIK G2
  • Effective rodenticide baits for rat control
  • Active ingredients: Chlorophacinone (BUTIK S) and Bromadiolone (BUTIK G2)
  • Effective against various rat species
  • Cost- and labour-efficient with proper baiting methods
Rhinoceros Beetle control- ORY-X
  • Contains Metarhizium anisopliae spores (highly pathogenic to beetles)
  • High spore viability (>80%)
  • Produced through a controlled, high-quality process
  • Reduces pest management cost and is environmentally friendly

Advanced Technologies For Efficient Estate And Mill Operations

FGV’s research focuses on automation and mechanisation to enhance operational productivity and efficiency. In line with Industrial Revolution 4.0, advanced geospatial technologies are deployed for precision agriculture, particularly in oil palm replanting.

This enables the development of accurate replanting blueprints with automated palm count data, supporting fertiliser estimation, estate management, and plant health monitoring, including proactive monitoring using precision tools.

New Strategic Crops

We conduct research on alternative high-value crops such as banana, pineapple, jackfruit, durian, mangosteen, mesta, and others, covering germplasm breeding, agronomic advisory, pest and disease management, and post-harvest technology. We also produce and supply elite planting materials for both FGV and external commercial markets.

Food Technology

To enhance palm oil value at the downstream level, our Food Technology research focuses on developing innovative, value-added food products for current and emerging markets. Using refined bleached deodorised palm oil (RDBPO) as a feedstock, various palm-based fractions are produced for applications such as margarine, vanaspati, fluidised palm oil, cocoa butter substitutes, salad dressings, and shortening.

Oleochemicals & Biochemicals

Our oleochemicals and biochemicals research focuses on basic oleochemicals, specialty derivatives, and improvements in palm oil midstream processing. It also covers applications in personal and home care products, animal feed, biochemicals and fermentation, and biodegradable plastics. We continue to support operations while leveraging collaborations with industry partners.
